What Are Sublingual CBD Oil Tinctures?

There is a myriad of CBD products on the market today and a variety of methods of consumption, from CBD oil vape pens to CBD-infused skin creams to gummy bears and much more.  One of the most effective delivery methods for CBD oil is sublingual tinctures. What are tinctures? How do they work? And what are the benefits of using them?

What Is a Tincture?

A tincture is a liquid preparation made from the essential oil extracts of a plant. In the case of CBD oil, the tincture is a hemp extract. CBD tinctures can be made with an oil base or an alcohol base. This base can be infused with either raw hemp oil extract, which is referred to as a full-spectrum CBD oil, or a more refined and concentrated CBD oil. This type of preparation may contain additional cannabinoids or terpenes found in the raw extract.

CBD tinctures can also be made with purified CBD isolate.

What Does Sublingual Mean?

The term sublingual simply means “under the tongue.” A sublingual CBD oil tincture is administered by placing a number of drops under the tongue. There, the CBD can be absorbed into the bloodstream via the capillaries in the tissues of the mouth. These capillaries can be clearly seen under the tongue in a mirror or behind the bottom lip.

CBD Oil Tinctures Have A Fast Onset Time

First, because CBD is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, the onset time of a CBD oil tincture is usually quicker than that of CBD edibles or CBD oil capsules. Onset time for effects can be anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. Some people have claimed that when treating seizures the effects may be noticed even faster.

The fast onset time makes sublingual CBD oil tinctures ideal for the possible use in treating sudden onset conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, seizures, and nausea. Some people also believe it makes it a better choice for use before going to sleep. Alcohol-based CBD oil tinctures will absorb faster than oil-based tinctures since blood is a water-based fluid and alcohol, unlike oil, mixes easily with water.

CBD Tinctures Offer a Relatively High Bioavailability

Another benefit of CBD oil tinctures is their higher bioavailability. The bioavailability of CBD is the amount of CBD that actually enters the bloodstream and becomes available to the rest of the body. When eaten, CBD-infused edibles or capsules have a lower bioavailability since some CBD will become trapped in the digestive system. On the other hand, vaping CBD oil offers both a higher bioavailability and a faster onset time than tinctures. But vaping is not for everyone.

CBD Tinctures Are Easy To Use

The simplicity of use is another upside to sublingual CBD oil tinctures. Just place a few drops under the tongue, hold it there for a minute or so to let it absorb, and that’s it.

Sublingual CBD Oil Tinctures offer users a number of benefits over other modes of ingestion, however, at the end of the day, personal preference is what will determine what is best for each user.
