What Do Medical Professionals Think Of CBD?

With all of the claims floating around today about cannabidiol (CBD), both research-based and anecdotal, it is essential that consumers know to include their doctor or medical professionals into the conversations they have about this wonderful extract. Every person is unique, and each person’s body can react differently to various nutrients, chemicals, and drugs, including CBD. That is why before self-prescribing anything, even something all-natural like industrial hemp CBD, speaking with a medical professional about the benefits of CBD, how to use it, and for which ailments to use it are important conversations in which everyone should partake.

Recently the website MindBodyGreen spoke with some medical professionals to find out their opinion on CBD, which begs the question, “what does the medical community think about CBD?”

CBD Is One Piece of A Larger Puzzle

One medical professional, William Cole, D.C., told MindBodyGreen that CBD is one piece of the larger puzzle that is a patient’s overall health treatment plan. Cole noted that it has many uses and that he, himself, takes it. “ For some, CBD has truly been the missing link in their health puzzle. It's one of the few things that I, too, take every day," Cole told MindBodyGreen.

A Pain Reliever

Doctor Carrie Diulus, M.D. told the site that CBD has shown, at least anecdotally, great potential for pain relief. Interestingly, the doctor noted that some of CBD’s other benefits -- its ability to promote relaxation, its use as a sleep aid -- are both, at their root, beneficial to patients with chronic pain.

"Ultimately there is a role for CBD in a variety of conditions. It decreases anxiety, is anti-inflammatory, and can help with sleep. It does also have some positive impact on pain. Some of it may be for the reasons I listed above,” Diulus told MindBodyGreen. “I think often it is beneficial because it helps with sleep and anxiety, which both can be an issue with both acute and chronic pain.”

Speak With A Doctor First

As amazing as CBD may be, and as much research and anecdotal evidence as there is right now, it is always important for patients to speak with their doctor before deciding to take any medication or nutrient, including CBD.

Another medical professional who was interviewed, Bindiya Gandhi, gave some very prescient advice when it comes to taking CBD for medical ailments: speak to your doctor first.

“Physicians recommend it for their chronic pain patients as well as fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis,” said Gandhi to MindBodyGreen. “Studies have shown the use of CBD oil in mice reducing inflammation significantly. Physicians also recommend CBD oil in patients who want to quit smoking as well as decrease opioid usage. It seems to be the wonder drug everyone wants! You can inhale it, rub in on the skin, or put drops in your food.”

“Talk to your doctor if this is a good alternative and to see if CBD is right for you," Gandhi continued.

Of course, this is just a small sample of medical professionals. What your doctor has to say may vary from what these doctors or the medical community, in general, have to say about CBD. CBD is one of the more promising all-natural products out on the market today, but it is still important to follow the advice of medical professionals.
